Description
This coin from Seville, Spain is a copper 2 maravedis, Ferdinand-Isabel, struck for use in New World. Just 5 years after
Christopher Columbus
found his way to the "new world"
King Ferdinand authorized Christopher Columbus to establish a mint in Santo Domingo. However the mint was never established. In 1506 these coins were imported from the mint in Seville and became the first coins made for the Americas. All though nominally issued by
Ferdinand and Isabella this coin was likely struck after
Isabella
's death. It is believed that
Ferdinand
kept
Isabella
's
name on the coin to honor her part in the exploitation of the Western Hemisphere.
Ex. Sedwick.
