To shorten without a Wire Stripper with cutoff holes you can do this: Put 2 nuts on the screw then put the screw threads first into a drill and turn the drill on and cut the screw off with a hacksaw then use the 2 nuts to clean up the threads while taking the nuts off. No drill do the same with the screw in a vise.
See photo of my Wire Stripper not included but shows how to custom cut your screws. Many Wire Strippers have Screw Cutters and you can Custom Cut your Brass or Steel Screws for your use. A "Trick" put 1 or 2 nuts on the screw then when you've cut your screw to length before you back the cut screw all the way out of the cutter screw it in more then part way out back and forth apx 6 times to shape the end of screw cut end so the screw will easily go straight into your nut or other threaded hole. After you cut finish the screw backing the screw back and forth again holding the nut(S) with pliers.
Of course just putting 2 nuts on and clamping in a vise and cutting off with a Hacksaw will also work. Working screw in and out of nuts will finish the screw for easier inserting into nut or threaded hole.
